Building a Multi-Provider Email Strategy for Maximum Reliability

January 15, 2026 7 min read

What happens when your email provider goes down? Or when they flag your account for "suspicious activity"? If you are relying on a single provider, your users do not get their password resets, order confirmations, or notifications.

Why Single-Provider is Risky

Even the biggest email providers have outages. Here are the risks:

  • Account suspensions: Automated systems flag legitimate accounts
  • Rate limiting: Sudden spikes can trigger sending limits
  • IP reputation issues: Shared IPs affected by other senders
  • Geographic latency: Single-region providers slow for global users

The Multi-Provider Approach

With Void Relay, setting up multiple SMTP providers is straightforward:

Example Multi-Provider Setup

  • Primary AWS SES (us-east-1) — 80% of traffic
  • Secondary Gmail SMTP — 15% of traffic
  • Backup Custom SMTP (EU) — 5% of traffic

Manual Fallback Configuration

Void Relay supports fallback SMTP configuration per SMTP config. Configure a fallback SMTP server for each of your primary SMTP configurations. If the primary fails, emails are automatically routed to your configured fallback.

  • Manual setup: Configure your fallback SMTP server in the dashboard
  • Per-SMTP fallback: Each primary SMTP can have its own dedicated fallback
  • Automatic routing: Once configured, emails automatically route to fallback on failure

Note: Users need to manually configure fallback SMTP servers in the dashboard. Multi-provider routing and health checks are not automatically managed.

Geographic Distribution

Different SMTP providers perform better in different regions:

  • US users: Route to AWS SES us-east-1 or us-west-2
  • EU users: Route to AWS SES eu-west-1 or European SMTP
  • Asia users: Route to AWS SES ap-southeast-1

Compliance & Data Residency

Some jurisdictions require data to stay within their borders:

  • • Route EU user emails through EU-based SMTP servers
  • • Keep sensitive emails on self-hosted infrastructure
  • • Comply with GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations

Cost Optimization

Multi-provider is not just about reliability—it is also about cost:

  • • Use the cheapest provider for bulk/non-critical emails
  • • Reserve premium providers for critical transactional emails
  • • Balance load based on pricing tiers
